Nestled in the peaceful Rajmahal Hills, approximately 8 km north of Barhait in the Sahibganj district of Jharkhand, Shivgadi Dham is a visually stunning and profoundly spiritual pilgrimage place. This temple, also called Gajeshwar Nath Dham, is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is regarded as Jharkhand’s “Mini Baba Dham.”
What makes Shivgadi Dham truly unique is its cave setting: the shrine is carved into a rocky cavern, where drops of water constantly seep through the rock and fall over the Shiva Lingam, giving a natural, year-round “jalabhishek” (water anointing) to the deity.
A huge banyan tree, known locally as the Manokamna Kalpataru, is located next to the entrance. In the expectation that Baba Gajeshwar Nath may grant their requests, devotees bind tiny stones to its roots.
Two etched footprints of Nandi, the holy bull of Shiva, on adjacent rocks contribute to the ethereal ambiance. According to legend, these markings appeared when Shiva defeated the demon Gajasura, who had previously placed the Shiva Lingam here, while Nandi stood on his hind legs.
According to mythology, Gajasura, a demon who underwent extreme penance to appease Shiva, constructed the Lingam. Shiva honored the Lingam by dubbing him “Gajeshwar Nath” after he was finally killed, thereby keeping his name forever.
Other traditions link the site to the Mahabharata, suggesting that Arjuna once saw Shiva on this very “Devana” hill.
Pilgrims must ascend around 195 steps to reach the temple, which starts at the base of the hill and winds through lush landscapes. Barharwa Junction, the closest train station, is around 26 kilometers distant, making the location both accessible and nestled away in serene natural settings.
When thousands of devotees gather for darshan, ceremonies, and a profound sense of spiritual rejuvenation on Mahashivratri and during the month of Shravan, the atmosphere of Shivgadi Dham becomes especially lively.
